Library access during “Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China’s Silk Road”

Since we are anticipating larger-than-normal attendance for the upcoming exhibition “Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China’s Silk Road” (May 7–September 4, 2016), here are some things you should know regarding access if you are planning to visit in the next few months:

  • It is strongly recommended that you allow extra time to park and get to the library, especially if you have scheduled an appointment in the Special Collections Reading Room.
• Since parking is limited, you may also want to consider alternatives to driving your own car to the Getty (such as taking public transportation or ridesharing options). Go to for the most up-to-date public transit information.
  • Because large crowds are expected in the GRI’s gallery space, you should enter, exit, and validate your parking on L2 if visiting the library Monday – Friday. (Since the L2 Reader entrance/exit is closed on the weekend however, you will need to use the Plaza entrance if visiting on a Saturday or Sunday.)
  • Finally, please be advised that in preparation for the opening of this exhibition, the Getty site will be closing early on Friday, May 6. All readers will need to leave the library by 4:30 p.m. that day.

As always, for the latest news about the library, including timely notices about access, subscribe to the library blog at Signing up is easy – just follow the link and enter your email in the area “Subscribe to receive posts via email” on the right side of the page.

GRI Reader parking fee waived as of July 1

Dear Getty Research Institute Reader,

We are very pleased to announce that beginning July 1, 2015, the Getty parking fee will be waived for Readers.

Readers who have current parking passes expiring before July 1 will have their pass expiration date extended to June 30, 2015.

Between now and June 30, new passes will be sold at prorated rates.

Please read the following carefully, as it will explain how the new validation system will work:

  • Pull a ticket upon entering the parking garage.
  • Be sure to take that ticket with you to the GRI in order to receive validated free parking. A lost ticket will require payment of the $15 parking fee.
  • The GRI L2 and Plaza entrances are the only locations at the Getty Center where you will be able to obtain a free parking validation. Free parking for readers will not be offered elsewhere onsite.
  • If you have a current reader badge, enter the GRI:
    • Monday-Friday: through the L2 entrance, near the café.
    • Saturday-Sunday: through the GRI Plaza entrance.
  • Give your Reader badge to Security to be swiped.
  • At the same time, hand over the parking ticket for validation. Tickets will not be validated without a current reader badge.
  • If you do not have a current badge, stop by the Reference Desk for assistance when the library is open: Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Be sure to follow this blog in order to keep up with the latest Research Library news.

Please contact with any questions.

We look forward to seeing you in the GRI!
