Extensive work will be taking place in both Plaza galleries and the GRI Lecture Hall in preparation for the upcoming Dunhuang exhibition.

As a result, there will be intermittent construction noise (and smells) emanating from the Plaza, especially between Wednesday, March 23 and Friday, April 8.

Facilities is planning to reinstall a large sunshade directly in front of Reader Carrel 308 on Friday, March 4. Because the shade is so tall and installs high up, a motorized lift will be used as part of the installation process. It is expected that there will be a lot of noise and disruption associated with this work, so readers who sit on L3 are advised to plan accordingly.

It is anticipated that the work will be completed by the end of the day Friday.

Library Access during GRI Gallery Construction

The Getty Research Institute is about to embark on the construction of a new exhibition gallery.  As part of its ongoing commitment to present engaging exhibitions to the public, the GRI is adding an additional 2,000 square feet of gallery space, bringing the total exhibition space to 2,800 square feet between two galleries.  The new gallery will replace the current Periodicals Reading Room on the Plaza Level.  At the same time a new periodicals reading space will be built in the adjacent Plaza Reading Room.

Construction will begin sometime in June and will continue for approximately 12 weeks.  Hours of construction will be Monday-Friday, 6:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Unfortunately, we anticipate that the construction will generate significant noise.  Conditions may be far less than optimal for Readers wishing to use the open areas of the library on Plaza and L2.

We apologize for the inconvenience this construction project may pose for you.  We recommend that you carefully consider your research requirements over the next months and make alternate arrangements when feasible, or you may wish to postpone your research plans until construction is complete.   However, because we realize that you may already have made plans for serious research at the GRI, the library will remain open to Readers throughout the construction period.

Reader hours will remain the same.  The Reference Desk will move from the Plaza level to L2, adjacent to the Circulation Desk.  The Special Collections Reading Room will remain open (Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) and we will do our best to honor existing appointments.  During this period we will carefully consider all requests for new appointments in order to best manage the more limited space we may need to move into temporarily.  There may be a reduction in the number of people we can accommodate as well as restrictions on the use of large-format material.

The GRI Plaza level entrance will be closed throughout the construction period.  During this time, Readers will be required to enter and exit the GRI through the emergency exit door next to GRI L2 Security, where you will check in and out.

A map to the temporary entrance/exit on L2, as well as any updates, will be posted next week here on this blog.  Be sure to check the blog regularly to learn the most current information and about any possible closures.
