The Special Collections Reading Room will be closed from Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 1, for annual maintenance projects.
Due to the change in Getty IP addresses, some services such as ILL and subscription databases and journals are currently unavailable. We are working on contacting these suppliers with our revised addresses. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The GRI’s new library systems are almost live! This will affect how library users find and access library materials. The new discovery system (http://primo.getty.edu) incorporates and enhances the current Research Library Catalog. It retrieves results from books, journals, archives, audiovisual materials, and digital content in the Research Institute’s collections as well as from subscription e-journals and databases.
Please read this entire message and make note of vital dates and information:
Beginning June 26:
Learn more and provide important feedback on the new discovery system. Library Staff will conduct 30-minute introductory sessions that will also serve as informal focus groups.
Mondays, 11:00 am – 11.30 am
Wednesdays, 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm
GRI Training Room on L2
Reservations are NOT required. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
Beginning July 10:
The former Research Library Catalog will no longer be available. The new discovery system will be the main way to search for materials in the Research Institute’s collections. The online request function will not be available until July 22.
The library’s online circulation system will be down as the cutover from the old system to the new occurs. The Request and Self-Checkout functions will NOT be available during this time. Please plan your library needs in light of this scheduled downtime by requesting materials in advance according to the following schedule:
Online requests for materials needed during the downtime must be completed before 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 9.
Requests for materials can be submitted during the downtime by sending email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the author, title, and ID or Call Number of the item you need.
Open stack materials must be checked out at the Circulation Desk during the downtime.
Beginning July 22:
Library users can request materials online through the new system.

The Getty Research Institute is about to embark on the construction of a new exhibition gallery. As part of its ongoing commitment to present engaging exhibitions to the public, the GRI is adding an additional 2,000 square feet of gallery space, bringing the total exhibition space to 2,800 square feet between two galleries. The new gallery will replace the current Periodicals Reading Room on the Plaza Level. At the same time a new periodicals reading space will be built in the adjacent Plaza Reading Room.
Construction will begin sometime in June and will continue for approximately 12 weeks. Hours of construction will be Monday-Friday, 6:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Unfortunately, we anticipate that the construction will generate significant noise. Conditions may be far less than optimal for Readers wishing to use the open areas of the library on Plaza and L2.
We apologize for the inconvenience this construction project may pose for you. We recommend that you carefully consider your research requirements over the next months and make alternate arrangements when feasible, or you may wish to postpone your research plans until construction is complete. However, because we realize that you may already have made plans for serious research at the GRI, the library will remain open to Readers throughout the construction period.
Reader hours will remain the same. The Reference Desk will move from the Plaza level to L2, adjacent to the Circulation Desk. The Special Collections Reading Room will remain open (Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) and we will do our best to honor existing appointments. During this period we will carefully consider all requests for new appointments in order to best manage the more limited space we may need to move into temporarily. There may be a reduction in the number of people we can accommodate as well as restrictions on the use of large-format material.
The GRI Plaza level entrance will be closed throughout the construction period. During this time, Readers will be required to enter and exit the GRI through the emergency exit door next to GRI L2 Security, where you will check in and out.
A map to the temporary entrance/exit on L2, as well as any updates, will be posted next week here on this blog. Be sure to check the blog regularly to learn the most current information and about any possible closures.
Please contact the Reference Desk at (310) 440-7390 with any questions, or GRIgallery@getty.edu.
