GRI Reader parking fee waived as of July 1

Dear Getty Research Institute Reader,

We are very pleased to announce that beginning July 1, 2015, the Getty parking fee will be waived for Readers.

Readers who have current parking passes expiring before July 1 will have their pass expiration date extended to June 30, 2015.

Between now and June 30, new passes will be sold at prorated rates.

Please read the following carefully, as it will explain how the new validation system will work:

  • Pull a ticket upon entering the parking garage.
  • Be sure to take that ticket with you to the GRI in order to receive validated free parking. A lost ticket will require payment of the $15 parking fee.
  • The GRI L2 and Plaza entrances are the only locations at the Getty Center where you will be able to obtain a free parking validation. Free parking for readers will not be offered elsewhere onsite.
  • If you have a current reader badge, enter the GRI:
    • Monday-Friday: through the L2 entrance, near the café.
    • Saturday-Sunday: through the GRI Plaza entrance.
  • Give your Reader badge to Security to be swiped.
  • At the same time, hand over the parking ticket for validation. Tickets will not be validated without a current reader badge.
  • If you do not have a current badge, stop by the Reference Desk for assistance when the library is open: Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Be sure to follow this blog in order to keep up with the latest Research Library news.

Please contact reference@getty.edu with any questions.

We look forward to seeing you in the GRI!

Important information about Reader access

The new gallery’s first exhibition, “Connecting Seas,” has opened. Regular hours will be Tuesday-Friday
and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

There are several procedural changes related to the GRI’s new exhibition space that you should be aware
of:

Single Elevator
There is a new mag stripe reader on the outside of the Plaza single elevator, next to the card reader. To
call this elevator, Readers will need to swipe their badges using this device.

Public Areas
The Plaza Reading Room is open to anyone who is interested in doing research in the library, but not as
an area for general sightseeing. A wooden gate was installed at the bottom of the ramp to help control
access to this area. A sign with library hours was installed, and a Library Closed sign will be added when a
Reference Librarian is not sitting at the desk. Please note: Extended Readers are always welcome to use
this wooden gate entrance/exit at anytime within their normal access hours, regardless of the Library
Closed sign.

Satellite Bookstore
There will be a satellite bookstore in the Plaza Lobby area (to the left as you enter the building), staffed
during gallery hours.

Bag Checks
Bag checks will continue to be necessary for all Staff, Scholars, Interns, Volunteers, Readers, etc. Please
be diligent about stopping by the Reception/Security Desk to do this.

Library Reader Entry/Exit
Since the summer construction, Readers have been able to access the building on L2 (next to the GRI’s
Security Desk), Monday-Friday. We are strongly encouraging Readers to use this entry/exit during the
week due to the increased activity near the Plaza Reception Desk. There is no change to weekend access:
Extended Readers, Staff, Scholars, etc., need to enter/exit the building through the Plaza, since the L2
entry is closed on weekends.

Holiday Closure Dates
The Library will close at 3:00 p.m. on December 24 and will re-open at 9:30 a.m. on January 2. The
Special Collections Reading Room will close at 5:00 p.m. on December 20 and will re-open at 9:30 a.m.
on January 2.

Extended Readers will have access 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. during the break, except for December 25,
December 30, and January 1, when the Library will be closed.
